North photographer Phil Restan stands with his camera at the ready against a stunning Sutherland backdrop of mountain and loch
A keen hill walker, it is a rare occasion for Phil to be in front of rather than behind the camera. His love of both photography and the rugged Highland countryside has led him recently to set up a new website featuring his work, much of which relates to Sutherland and Wester Ross He specialises in dramatic landscapes, particularly wild mountain and loch scenes, but he also has a long standing interest in wildlife
Shots currently posted on his website, include a particularly impressive close-up of a stag and another of a Highland cow. Phil also has an eye for the unusual and his abstract images include one of a barn door, a winch and a BT engineer sitting in his van near Lairg, working on a cable that had over 100 separate wires in it.
There is also one of the family of scarecrows to be found sitting on a bench outside a cottage at Evelix. The scarecrows have become a bit of a landmark in recent years.
A former police constable with the Derbyshire force, Phil retired to Sutherland some years ago and lives in Edderton with his wife, Sue, a district reporter with the Press and Journal.
His website also contains a quirky page with interesting information on the Highland biting midge, provided by Dr Alison Blackwell, an internationally recognised authority on biting insects , particularly midges. Said Phil: “I put together the information with the aim of helping those who visit the area between June and mid September.
Phil is also interested in web design and would be happy to help anyone looking to have a web presence but uncertain how to proceed. He said: “People may want to put their business on the web or have a family site to keep family members up to date. Personal sites are becoming popular as somewhere to showcase yourself and your personality.
